Kodaikanal is often called the "Princess of Hill Stations" due to its scenic beauty and pleasant climate. The centrepiece of Kodaikanal is its star-shaped artificial lake, created in 1863 by Sir Vere Henry Levinge, the then Collector of Madurai. The Kurinji flower, which blooms only once every 12 years, is native to the Kodaikanal region. Kodaikanal Solar Observatory, established in 1899, is one of the oldest astronomical observatories in India.
