Ritesh Arya, who is also the founder of Tethys Fossil Museum, while conducting groundwater exploration in the rugged terrain of Burtse, situated in the beautiful eastern part of Ladakh region unearthed these marine fossils, which included gastropods (snail-like mollusks), foraminifera (mostly microscopic organisms but here they are up to 2cm long), and bivalves (shellfish). This discovery further establishes the idea that Himalayas were born as continental plates thrust out of Tethys Sea around 40 million years ago.
