Iconic death mask of Tutankhamun did not belong to the boy-king: Study

According to the researchers, the mask was created for a high-status female, most likely the stepmother of King Tut whose body was never discovered. The sudden death of Tutankhamun may have led to his face getting grafter on the top of the mask's true owner. The new theory was finalised after they re-examined the 1922 excavation's historical records and found mentions of body modifications that did not match the ancient Egyptian tradition.
