Mpox crisis: Philippines reports first case; DRC death toll reaches 584

Days after WHO declared mpox a global public health emergency after a surge in the cases in Africa, fearing the spread of the virus in countries outside Africa, the case reported is a 33-year-old Filipino man with no travel history. This is the first case of the virus, formerly known as monkeypox, in the country since last year in December. The new variant, Clade 1b, is proving to be more deadly and resulting in a higher number of deaths with severe infections.
