Oscars 2025: China to send WWII doc The Sinking of the Lisbon Maru

The World War II documentary will represent China at the 97th Academy Awards in the Best International Feature Film category. The Fang Li directorial is on an under-documented event in which an unmarked Japanese troop transport ship carrying British POWs (prisoners of war) started sinking and Chinese fishermen scurried to their rescue. This is the first time China has sent a documentary to represent the country at the biggest global awards.
