The climber, identified as T. Hagiwara, kept in touch with family through an inReach communication device. When they didn't hear from him for several days, the family contacted park rangers on May 19, who were able to identify the fallen climber's location at 17,000 feet using data from his satellite communication device. Data showed its location had not changed since 16 May, "suggesting a fall from the Denali pass traverse took place on that day".
