Thane police booked five for extortion, casteist remarks

The accused, who reside in a slum colony in Badlapur that is set to be redeveloped under an SRA scheme, allegedly demanded Rs 17 crore from the developer and some members of the slum community in exchange for allowing the redevelopment to proceed. They also reportedly took Rs 2 lakh from the builder. The police have also invoked the "Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act" against them, according to an official.
