“It was a little like The Last of Us. I’m glad that we didn’t do what we were doing, because The Last of Us has a lot more real estate to explore the same stuff,” David Fincher told in an interview. Paramount had greenlit a sequel to be directed by Juan Antonio Bayona, who ultimately exited the project. Fincher was then to helm the project. Production scheduling and other setbacks pushed the film back which led the studio to make the decision to cancel the project altogether.
