Good news for nature lovers. At the beginning of the year, good news came from the permanent freshwater lake on the outskirts of Guwahati, locally called the ‘Deepor Beel’. A haven for migratory birds, Deepor Beel has seen severe destruction owing to pollution from several rivulets. Deepor Beel was recognised as a Ramsar site in November 2002. The bird count in this year’s census is estimated to be between 17,000 and 18,000.
