The story so far: The Ministry of Electronics and IT (MeitY) has notified amendments to the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021 (IT Rules, 2021) on October 28. World over, governments are grappling with the issue of regulating social media intermediaries (SMIs). Prior to the IT Rules, 2021, platforms followed their own mechanisms and timelines for resolving user complaints.
