A seed vault has been built near the Norwegian town of Longyearbyen, which will preserve the biodiversity of our crops for future generations. The permafrost makes the stone caverns a natural cold store. To be able to safely store seeds from all over the world, a chilly minus 18 degrees C has to be maintained at all times.
The vault is protecting the world's agricultural genetic diversity and protecting our future food supply in case of catastrophe.
