Germany’s population reaches all time high due to record immigration

Germany’s population swelled to an all-time record number of at least 84.3 million inhabitants at the end of 2022, due to record net immigration, the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) said. Net immigration was more than four times higher than in the previous year, and stood at the highest level since records began in 1950. Destatis underlined that “without net immigration, the population would already have been shrinking since 1972, as more people have died than were born every year since”.
