New Scientist's "Save Britain's Rivers" campaign highlights citizen science projects aimed at protecting and restoring the UK's waterways. One such project is RiverFly, where volunteers are trained to collect water samples and count the number of invertebrates present, providing data for the UK's Environment Agency. About 300 volunteers monitor insect populations in rivers across the country each month through RiverFly.
