Kaku Toufiq and his aide, Hayyan Kola, were apprehended by customs officials in connection with a gold smuggling case which turned out to be a case of funding terrorist activities through such means. The matter was eventually transferred to the Special Cell, which dispatched a team to Karnataka. Kaku’s wife is a cousin of Riyaz Bhatkal, Iqbal Bhatkal, and Yasin Bhatkal, the founders of the Indian Mujahideen (IM).
