A recent report by Project 39A, a research and advocacy group at New Delhi’s National Law University that works on the death penalty, found that the number of prisoners on the death row at the end of 2021 was the highest in India since 2004.

The Supreme Court pronounced verdicts in six cases involving the death sentence in 2021 and 11 in 2020, compared to 28 in 2019. From the six cases in 2021, the Supreme Court did not confirm any death sentence.
