New COVID variant spreads quickly in the US

A new COVID variant has emerged in the United States, Omicron subvariant XBB.1.5 accounts for more than 40 per cent of cases in the US, up by almost 100 per cent from a week ago. The variant first appeared in Asia which resulted in a big spike in cases in the Northern Hemisphere. Data from this variant in countries like India showed hospitalisations did not increase and the new COVID vaccine boosters offered strong protection against the strain.
