On September 2, the government of Taiwan launched its new passport design with independent identity, deemed as official from January 2021. The new passport highlights “Taiwan” in Latin characters and has scaled down the ‘Republic of China’.

The passport design long created confusion that it belongs to the PRC due to large text emblazoned near the word ‘passport’. Taiwan now has its country’s name written and the ‘Republic of China’ in English removed.
