Theni panchayat launches free auto travel for elders

A one-of-a-kind initiative to provide free autorickshaw travel for senior citizens, undertaken by the Palanichettipatti town panchayat in Theni district along with local autorickshaw drivers’ associations and NGOs, was inaugurated on Monday, marking the observance of Labour Day. Panchayat President V P A Mithun Chakravarthy said the scheme is in line with one of the objectives/duties of urban local bodies, which is to alleviate poverty and take care of senior citizens.
