Two new Covid deaths reported in India; single-day rise of 144 cases

Two new deaths -- one each from Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh -- have been reported in 24 hours. The number of active cases of the infection has declined to 840. The number of daily cases had dropped to double-digits till December 5, 2023, but cases began to rise after the emergence of a new variant and cold weather. Since the pandemic began in early 2020, more than 4.5 crore people have been infected and over 5.3 lakh deaths recorded.
