Charmadi Hasanabba started a hotel, The Hotel Charmadi, at the Charmadi village. As a 20-year-old in 1971, he decided in 1986 to dedicate himself to the task of rescuing accident victims and getting them to the Belthangady taluk hospital in Dakshina Kannada using his meagre resources – whenever he heard of accidents and roadblocks in the remote hills. Hasanabba, now 73, is a legendary figure in the annals of the Charmadi Ghat and an unsung hero.
