National Geographic Explorer Joyce Poole reflects on her life’s achievement: an ethogram cataloguing nearly 50 years of data on African elephant behaviour.
On May 25, the database went public, allowing anyone from a high schooler to a university professor to search for a particular behaviour—say, an elephant calf butting its head—and find several videos that explain why the animal is making that particular action.
