Five months before the 2017 Champions Trophy, MS Dhoni handed over Team India's charge to Virat Kohli. Speaking at an event in 2018, Dhoni said, "I resigned from captaincy because I wanted the new captain to get enough time for preparing a team before the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019. Selecting a strong team without giving the new captain appropriate time isn’t possible." Kohli captained Team India's white-ball teams from 2017 to 2021.
