On March 30 this year, the former Prime Minister was conferred the prestigious Bharat Ratna -- India's highest civilian honour. He was the fifth PM of India and was in office for 170 days from July 28, 1979, to January 14, 1980. His deep commitment to the farming community is honoured by celebrating his birthday as 'Kisan Diwas'. Opposed to the country's first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru's socialist economy, he advocated ownership rights to the farmers.
